PBX System (IP PBX) on Budget for your Yacht…

If you don’t have a PBX system already on your yacht you might consider having Alan Spicer Marine Telecom build you a modern IP PBX out of common PC hardware. It can save on the cost of installing a commercial PBX system - and can be used to leverage Voice over IP across Broadband or 3G Internet connections whereever you go.

PBX, in case you didn’t know what that is, I didn’t think most of you would want a long drawn out technical article. More info can be found here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Private_branch_exchange

It can also have the added advantage of using existing IP Network (onboard wired and wireless computer network) typically used for Internet Access. This can save on wiring installation of extensions for the PBX system. Instead of having to run phone cables - we use existing networking (wired, wireless) to deploy new type IP Handsets or IP Telephones instead of traditional PBX extensions.

Tired of running for the boat phone extension when it rings? You can also run an IP Telephone Software on your laptop, or PDA / Smart Phone … and log your extension in right there. Answer the PBX phone calls whereever you are AT YOUR CONVENIENCE.

The system is a software that runs on modern Windows Operating System - while providing the expected powerful PBX capabilities. But instead of having a PBX expert have to come in and “program” yours system … it’s all manageable from your easy chair on your Laptop or Desktop computer.

I obviously offer consulting on the more advanced features … and we can get any questions answered at any time - either from myself - or from the manufacturer.

Here’s what it looks like (Management console and one Windows IP Phone extension logged in - in a test environment.)

Savings can be had by using VOIP (yes, like Vonage) provider to handle inbound and outbound calls. VOIP becomes your “Phone Line”. But it can also support other standard plug in phone lines as well (shore line, Cell Phone Line, … etc.)

Replace your PC Shared WiFi with Fixed, Web Page Manageable, WiFi Hotspot Sharing System

 Picture 159

Are you currently getting WiFi Hotspot Internet on your yacht by connecting with a PC Computer and sharing that onto your boat for laptops and such with Windows Internet Connection Sharing?

If you already have an external WiFi Antenna installed you can replace using that unreliable Internet Connection Sharing to share a WiFi signal - with our Marine Wireless Bridge / WiFi Hotspot Sharing Router System - and for only $500.00. And you can probably install it yourself????!!!!

Chances are you have an LMR-400 coax cable run … it is using N-Connectors and is then adapted to a little radio pigtail that goes into a WiFi Card in your Desktop PC.

Get this system for $500.00 (and any shipping depending on how fast you want it?) and put it in place of the PC. Now I didn’t say throw away the PC computer… Instead you will jack in the New System to your onboard network - let it manage the network. Now you can shut down that PC when it’s not needed instead of leaving it on around-the-clock. The New System will now do what the PC was doing, but more reliable. Windows Internet Connection Sharing tends to be flakey! It stops working and confuses the heck out of you!

This Marine WiFi Bridge / WiFi Hotspot Sharing System has a nice Web Page-based Control Center where you can find and connect to WiFi Hotspot Systems. Once you are connected this connection is shared throughout the boat. You don’t have to leave another computer on at all. It handles the onboard network (even when it’s not being used to connect to an outside WiFi Signal.) It does this using common NAT and DHCP protocols - NAT hides your onboard network by translating the Outside Internet Address to Inside Internet Addresses (typically 192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x) - DHCP assigns each computer one of those “inside” addresses and also Network Mask, Gateway, and DNS Server settings. Without this kind of automated help … your onboard network can quickly become on non-working mess.

Here’s the system:

2009-2 Alan Spicer Marine Telecom (2nd half 2009) Flyer now available

* Please have a look at it. If it gives you any ideas of what you might need, or what might need attention - please give me a call. My flyer has traditionally done very well when given out to yacht captains, owners, or crews … as it makes them think about what they have already (often already in flyer pictures) or what they might need.

I also now have General Marine Electronics services with Bryan of International Marine Electronics. So if it has to do with marine give me a call and chances are we can help you out with products, services, and/or installations.

If you cannot see the whole flyer on my blog - just click on it to get a full image. You should be able to right click and Save Picture to save a copy for yourself. Please pass it on to your friends, co-workers, and associates. Thank you Very Much.
