Ericsson W35 unit pictures with a cheap (?) web cam … but a REAL E W35

* Here are some pictures of an Ericsson W35. Yes the quality of the pictures may be not so good. The web cam does some megapixels and hd resolution … but it’s a bit rough in the shop environment to get good lighting, and reflections are a bear!

But… it’s a real Ericsson W35 - not marketing photos … these photos likely show more than any marketing photos would.

Stand By Mode - by pressing the bottom front button. Turns off the Internet, but maintains voice telephone capability. Make sure the kids do their homework, or the workers do their work, or the crew of the boat is working instead of surfing the Internet. Light changes from blue to red when standby mode is engaged. Press it again to go back to normal.

Ooops! The Ericsson W25 - the W35’s older sibling … and still quite a formidable unit, minus the HSUPA (higher speed upload.)

* Anyway - the Ericsson W35, not much bigger than a DVD or Blu-Ray box … a little bit taller … a little bit thicker. It fits in your hand at least to maneuver it around. It comes with a stand - should you want to have it on display in operation somewhere. It can also be mounted on a wall or bulkhead. It’s light enough to be attached even with Super Velcro or 3M Dual Lock. It does 3G + (plus) (See web page screen shots in my previous post below) HSPA - High Speed Packet Access (including both HSUPA and HSDPA - look those up in Wikipedia), as well as Voice Cellular Telephone - ATA adapted to RJ11 for analog phones or PBX systems. You will notice an MCX antenna jack in these pictures - that could take a mobile or marine antenna in a motor vehicle or sailing / motor yacht, or even on a home or other building structure. It can even take directional Yagi “beam” antennas. * You can see the signal in real time in the web pages interface for aiming or testing an external antenna if necessary.

It’s worldwide compatible … so as long as you can power the thing, you can use it in your travels worldwide. It is backward compatible GSM - GPRS and Edge - it is Quad Band + WCDMA. It is unlocked for any cellular carrier (chances are your cell phone or smart phone is NOT! It’s locked to one carrier.) for anywhere in the US, Canada, Europe, Asia, … Anywhere there is GSM, UMTS, HSPA (WCDMA) it will work.

Any questions?

Ericsson 35 - on SpeedTest.net doing 2.73 Megabits Per Second

Ericsson W35 on Speedtest.net clocking in at 2.73 Megabits Per Second download and 0.45 Megabits Per Second (450 Kilobits Per Second) on upload. Note this is on on “3G +” - 3G Plus — on AT&T UMTS / HSPA - with both High Speed Uplink Packet Access and High Speed Downlink Packet Access. A lot of tests I ran averaged over 2 Megabits per second. Even the worst ones ran around 1.4 Megabits per second … and that is usually the fault of the Internet and the Testing Server and not AT&T or the Ericsson W35 unit.

So yes, this can be your DSL … on your boat, in your home or office, or in your automobile.

When Pirates Attack: Shipping Executive Speaks Out

When Pirates Attack: Shipping Executive Speaks Out

The crew of the Liberty Sun was on high alert. Just days after the dramatic rescue of Capt. Richard Phillips and the Maersk Alabama from pirates, the Liberty Sun was off the waters of East Africa on a mission of mercy, carrying enough food aid to feed more than 250,000 people for a year. Then it happened. Somali pirates attacked the ship, damaging it with four rocket-propelled grenades and strafing it with automatic weapons fire. While none of the crew was injured and the vessel escaped capture, there were many valuable lessons learned.

Come hear them during the luncheon presentation by Liberty Maritime President and CEO Philip J. Shapiro at Marine Log’s Countering Pirates on Sept. 16 at the Washington Marriott Hotel. Join Mr. Shapiro and other marine executives as they discuss and debate how to effectively deal with pirates, as well as the legal and financial problems posed by continued armed robbery at sea.

Among the topics to be discussed:

-  What are IMO’s new guidelines regarding piracy?
-  Should mariners be allowed to carry arms?
-  How should you prepare your crew and ship before you
     enter pirate-infested waters?
-  What are the legal ramifications of armed security?
Don’t miss this valuable event, where you can learn from the real-life experiences of others within the industry.
