New AVG Anti-Virus Free version is out…

A new version of AVG Free Anti-Virus Version 9.0 is out. So you need to have your 7 with your 9. Now supporting Windows 7. I found this out because I’ve installed Windows 7 Professional and needed to look for an Anti-Virus program. Windows still doesn’t include AV protection, but warns you in the alerts - in the task bar notification area that something is needed.

AVG will still push you to get the paid AVG Internet Security, now also up to version 9. I personally don’t like it because it tends to break things like Printing on Local Network - when it’s not configured properly. Users just don’t want to configure a firewall. IMHO they don’t need Another Firewall to configure. Not unless they’ve got an I.T. Guy around to bail them out when they get into trouble.

AVG is using a shorter downloader program, which is what you will first download, which actually then downloads and installs the rest of the program. It took a good 10 minutes or so at 1.5Mb/s to download it all. Just so you know. I can’t tell you how big it actually is because the whole thing is NOT a download that you can save somewhere and look at the size.

I immediately modified the settings and changed the scheduled scan to just scan my C: drive because I don’t want it scanning the 2+ Terabytes of my entire internal and external hard drive real estate. Those scans tend to go on Forever and slow down the computer.

Basic Protection, yep, that’s all you need. Keep the Windows Firewall on along with your Automatic Updates.
