Yachting Onboard Entertainment: What up with 3D TV? Should you rush out and buy one for your boat?
15. April 2010 by admin.
So what’s the dealio on 3D TV ohhh? Should you rush out and buy 3D television sets now to replace the Flat Screen TV’s you probably just got in 2009????
Probably not. First of all you have to wear 3D glasses, right? Like when you go see a 3D movie. And you and your guests are just not going to want to do that. And who needs another item to lose onboard a boat right?
This article:
talks about why certain people should not watch 3D TV. Children and Teens shouldn’t watch 3D TV. Older persons shouldn’t watch 3D TV (there goes the Owner’s Interest and your financing of putting 3D TV onboard). People who are nursing or pregnant. It’s starting to sound like those medicine commercials on TV! Ask your doctor… Why the hell are you advertising drugs on TV that people have to ask their doctor about? You should be advertising on DOCTOR TV not on GENERAL TV. Anyway why are they selling 3D TV’s if so many people should ask their doctor before using them in 3D mode?
Honestly it sounds like crap and hype to me. In 3D mode you’ll have to wear the 3D glasses. So they are pulling the same tricks that are done on movie screens, apparently … or very similar. It’s not like 3D is actually coming out of the flat screen by itself - without requiring cardboard / plastic glasses being worn by “everyone”. Ho hummm, yawn… I’m bored about it already. Call me when 3D comes out of the TV itself without requiring me to wear some cheap optics.
* And this guy says …

3D TV – I don’t care
by ToddLiss on March 29, 2010
How cool am I?
Where did this 3D barrage come from? I swear, 6 months ago 3D movies were what dreams were made of. We all had seen 3D presentations at various theme-parks and destinations but where did the overnight obsession come from? 3D has been around for 20 years, why the rush now?
Well, obviously Avatar played a roll in making 3D the greatest thing since sliced bread, but people are taking it a little too far. We all love innovation, but 3D is jumping the gun.
Remember when The Matrix came out, and “Matrixing” was an everyday word? Remember how cool it was the first time you saw Keanu dodge those bullets? Remember how many bad uses of the technology there were in the 5 years after the movie? We still see them today. Heck, even the second and third installments of the Matrix showed flaws with the technology.
So here’s my beef: just because one movie is a instant success and technological breakthrough doesn’t mean that the technology is ready for everyday home use. Avatar did take James Cameron over 10 years to make; now tv companies are saying that because 3D was great in one movie, that it’s ready for everyday home viewing (only 3 months after the release of the movie)… How does this make sense?
Chances are home 3D tv is going to be mediocre at first, with very little programming support the new technology. You’re going to spend $1000 for a television that sometimes shows 3D versions of 2D shows. This doesn’t sound like a product for me.
Even if 3D tv was supported by programming, and was an amazing product, I still have a beef with it. Who really wants to sit in the privacy of their own home, with their loved ones, watching tv… wearing 3D glasses!? People don’t even like wearing them at Disneyland, why the heck would they want to wear them in their living room?
It’s impractical, uncomfortable and strange. What if I wear prescription glasses? A TV comes with two pairs, but what if I have a family of 4? People have a hard enough time keeping track of the remote, how are they going to keep track of ANOTHER two sets of eye-glasses? What about the damaged, broken, or lost pairs, how much will replacements be? It’s just too rushed.
3D tv is just so impractical right now, lets finally get a handle on HDTV (which we’re just finally beginning to grasp) and give the 3D tv technology some more R&D time. The first wave of up and coming 3D tvs will probably meet mediocre reviews, all which could have been avoided by releasing it when it was ready and not because of Avatar fever.
[end]
* Anyway this might be one to watch and see … watch for reviews … wait 6 months or a year and see if there is any difference in the technology, and if there are favorable reviews. I’m taking a “Windows XP” type of view for yachts on this topic. Hold off, keep your HDTV for now.

Free WiFi Internet for Marine Vessels at Harbour Island Marina in Northern Eleuthera in the Bahamas
15. April 2010 by admin.
Anyone Marine Mobile make sure you check out:
Free WiFi Internet for Marine Vessels at Harbour Island Marina in Northern Eleuthera in the Bahamas - provided by (WiFi System, Engineering, not the actual Internet Service itself, which is provided by THAT marina) Alan Spicer Marine Telecom and International Marine Electronics. Good strong signal and fast Internet Speeds.
http://www.waterwayradio.net/ 7245 Khz (7.245 Mhz) at 0745 hours Eastern Time Daily - Valid Amateur Radio Operators License Needed. License needed to transmit, no license is obviously needed just to listen. It’s a good “Net” run by good people dedicated to helping boaters of all sizes with Ham Radio onboard. It’s a good emergency backup system … and not a bad idea to keep your SSB Radio skills practiced by operating your radio gear by checking in. I try to get on every morning.
P.S. We make the Ship Side “WiFi Hotspot Sharing System” as well … in case anyone wants to D.I.Y. or have it installed. We also do Cellular Mobile Broadband Router (3G Cellular Internet) - Sharing systems for marine vessels as well. Share one signal to all of your computers onboard … wired or wireless.

Qinghai province earthquake report 1 - April 15

Qinghai province earthquake report 1 - April 15
http://forums.qrz.com/showthread.php?t=244776
The Chinese Radio Sports Association (CRSA) has asked that the frequencies of 7050kKHz and 7060kHz be kept clear for emergency ham radio communications following a devastating earthquake in Yu Shu district, Qinghai province.
A number of radio amateurs are already active in supporting the rescue and recovery efforts including BG9UA, BG9UP and BG9UO.
The emergency communication team of Anhui amateur radio society, led by Mr Du BG6CEV was flying to Qinghai today (15 April) to bring communication equipment.
The earthquake measuring 7.1 on the Ritcher scale occurred on the morning of Tuesday has left 589 people dead, nearly 10,000 injured and 10,000 families needing to be resettled due to 99% of houses damaged.
Yu Shu located in a plateau with temperatures fall to -5 degrees (minus five degrees) making conditions bad for those without shelter as well as hampering rescue efforts. Water, electricity and other facilities are cut.

Another boat heard from … Fat Hog’s Bay, Tortola, BVI (Caribbean)
15. April 2010 by admin.
Fat Hogs Bay, Tortolla, BVI (Caribbean Sea)
Photo from Marinas.com
I’ve just heard from one of my yachting customers, some questions about using the wifi system we’ve specified and shipped, that got installed onboard. They’ve got both - WiFi Hotspot Sharing (http://www.wifiyacht.net) and Cellular 3G (http://www.marinetelecom.net/Ericsson_W35/) systems onboard, by: Alan Spicer. The customer reports that the systems are working *Great!* That’s the word from the boats mouth
They don’t have horses on the water so we have to take the “boat’s mouth” word as golden.
So where are you? I always ask… Where in the world is Carmen Sandiego?
Fat Hog’s Bay!
https://marinas.com/view/overview/635_Fat_Hogs_Bay_Tortola
Well that’s pretty cool. Reportedly a nice strong and fast WiFi Internet Connection there. Wish I could be there … it looks beautiful!
