Amateur Radio Signal Reports… What does “5 9″ mean?

15. October 2010 20:09 / Leave a Comment / Alan Spicer

Amateur Radio Operators give signal reports somewhat based upon the “S-Meter” signal strength meter reading on the front panel of their radio – but also based upon the perceived quality or readability of the radio transmission. Back before the S-Meter was available this was always an estimated or perceived signal report based on the R-S-T system. The T or Tone part of the signal report does not pertain to voice or SSB / AM / FM operations, but does pertain to C.W. – Continous Wave – or Morse Code transmissions. Most DX or CONTEST stations always report “59″ or “fifty nine” to every contact by convention. In some contests you have to specify if you will be reporting ALL “”59″‘s or actual R-S-T signal reports. I guess it is easier to give 5-9 to everyone as it speeds up contesting or DX Pileups. So no matter what your actual signal is as long as you can be heard enough to get your call sign, name, and probably your location, you will likely always get a “59″ signal report.

In slower times … in slower more casual contacts we usually give an actual signal report using the S-Meter on the Rig and the R-S-T system as well as a little more help about how strong someone really is, how their audio sounds, and we often trade radio and antenna and other equipment (Station Equipment or “Working Conditions Here…”) information. Both methods of operation are fun. The slower casual contacts usually end in more friendships or at least getting to know each other and station equipments information being shared. Contesting and DX’ing is quite challenging working DX Pileups – where many stations are trying to get that “rare” country or location contact in the log book. Logging and even radio control is often Computer Controlled these days – including QRZ.COM call sign information look ups right from the logging software.

Here is the R-S-T chart so when you view my videos, if you didn’t know, now you will know what those reports mean:
