Windows 2000 and Above – See your Hard Disk LEDs… (Free)

10. October 2012 02:46 / Leave a Comment / Alan Spicer

Do you have a need to see your HARD DISK DRIVE activity LED? Have you wanted to see if the computer was busy doing something on the Hard Disk Drive (or multiple drives?)?

Many computers are installed on the floor under the desk or closed away in a cabinet … or otherwise generally not viewable and accessable, especially onboard yachts. Even if you can see the front of the computer it may not even have a Hard Drive “Activity” LED at all … or it may have only 1 for multiple hard drives.

You may have additional large capacity storage for various purposes. It would be nice to see the activity of each of your drives SEPARATELY by their letter “C”, “D”, … whatever.

Sometimes the computer gets busy doing something … and you want to know if it is slowing down because it’s working on something …

* Enter a little utility called “FloatLED”. I’ve had it for quite awhile … but today I found it’s home page: http://www.stone-oakvalley-studios.com/floatled_index.php on Stone Oakvalley Studios. The newest version, v.1.12, is dated in November 2011 … which is a couple of years newer than the version I had been using (which still worked on Windows 7 – even 64-bit Windows.)

It does one thing and does it good. It shows the READ and WRITE on your Hard Disk Drives. The “Activity”. It doesn’t try to do anything else. And it doesn’t try to be too fancy. It’s small and sweet. And it provides a useful indication of when your hard drives are “busy” – that is being used.

You will probably want to configure the DRIVES shown … the first time you run it. I believe that by default it shows all letters – but you can limit it to just the ones you need to see. You can also make the drive icon squares bigger or smaller. And you can move the little display around. (In the older version mine tended to get stuck behind the bottom task bar.) You can put it wherever it is the least intrusive on your desktop.

I have 4 drives being watched: C: – The main boot and Windowd drive, N – and external USB drive, O – another external USB drive, and X – a newer SATA 1 Terabyte Drive (altogether 3.5 TB of storage.)

* Enjoy!
