4G For Yachts – Alan Spicer Marine Telecom

Windows 8 is coming … but probably not in businesses and boats for awhile

18. October 2012 02:41 / Leave a Comment / Alan Spicer

On October 26th … not longer before Halloween … Windows 8 is set to be released. But businesses will likely be slow in adopting it – many have not even upgraded to Windows 7 yet. Many don’t like the new TILES interface but reportedly Microsoft has the traditional Windows 7 style interface available in Windows 8 as well. The idea being to move everybody forward towards an “ex desktop” world. More like shoving everybody towards it I think. There will also be multiple versions of Windows 8 – and RT version for ARM processors (likely in portable or mobile devices) and an non-RT version for the standard x86 (AMD, Intel) crowd.

Supposedly Windows 8 Pro Upgrade (from Windows 7?) can be had for $40.00.

Everything is “App”‘y … I didn’t say Happy … Everything is an App. But there are Mobile Device only Apps and Windows Apps. Personally I don’t know why they have to drag that paradigm has to be shoved down the throats of Windows Desktop users … maybe to sell more “Apps” to them.

Things are cloudy … with the Sky Drive “cloud storage” thing integrated into Windows 8 … so you can put your things in a free 7 Gb Sky Drive (mine won’t fit anyway … but maybe some pictures and temporary small amount of documents might go) and retrieve them from anywhere. (We were doing things in the CLOUD before it got called the CLOUD anyway … there goes another one of those paradigms. It was called FTP or a Web Server. And often we ran those ourselves, or used one online somewhere. So what’s new about cloud? Maybe it’s easier. I still like FTP and for Secure file transfers SSH and SCP – Secure copy – which can have an FTP-like interface as well.)

Social Media is integrated with a SHARE thing … I personally like my share things (and other things) kind of seperate – like the old Unix paradigm – make small simple programs that do one thing good and allow them to connect with other such programs to do bigger jobs.

When I finally get a copy of Windows 8 that I can run in a VM … or decide to upgrade one of my computers around here – I can perhaps write a post on my opinion after having actually run the thing. If it is as stable and can do what Windows 7 currently can do … I’ll probably be all for it – with the exception of boats that their Navigation and such software are not approved for or cannot run on it. Often it takes awhile for Marine Software to catch up with the new operating systems versions.
