Bahamas, Caribbean – Cellular Voice and Data info. (research) … The hunt for Red 4G October

27. March 2013 10:33 / Alan Spicer

“Capt. Marko Ramius: When he reached the New World, Cortes burned his ships. As a result his crew was well motivated.”

The hunt for Red 4G October … or any month for that matter …

The quick and dirty … Bahamas APN is – APN: internet.btcbahamas.com. No one makes mention of a username and password needed for the APN so I guess that’s not needed.

Ahem … LIME may not have one single APN for you to program … I’m still researching this (as my earlier page on this stuff this is a Living Document subject to change and updates.) This link from 2012 – http://www.geezam.com/how-to-access-lime-or-digicels-3g-internet-using-an-unlocked-huawei-e1556-modem-dongle-or-nokia-modem-dongle/ seems to come out of Jamaica … and the APN is a jamaica only one – it looks like! Wanna know more about Caribbean telecoms politics? They linked to more here: http://www.geezam.com/limes-4g-experience-centers-challenge-the-rise-of-dekal-wireless-dragon/.

OFDM and QAM what’s not to like about that. Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplex and Quadrature Amplitude Modulation – more information than most of you want probably, although I might enjoy it! :-) You might try: ppinternet for APN for LIME … and there was a Barbados specific one on here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1sMkv5U-g78kfCebbyXlvnr1gPlpiIinDTxVkohDSugw/edit?pli=1 as well. This guy: http://www.unlockit.co.nz/mobilesettings/settings.php?id=584 says APN is ppinternet as well … so maybe “ppinternet” is the magic bullet for LIME? I’m not promising anything. Please ask locally if you’re boating to the Caribbean Island Countries … and tell me what works for you?! Thanks.

Well 4G is the New World and there will be no talking about burning anybodies ships, but going to the Bahamas and/or the Caribbean makes a yacht / boat captain very motivated to have Internet Access there. This often means Cellular 3G / 4G or WiFi – and of course we acknowledge marine satellite systems for those fortunate to have them.

WiFi might not be everywhere … but a lot of marinas have it. After that you’re down to 4G / 3G. I had a long standing page on cellular phone and Internet in the Bahamas and Caribbean – but the page has fallen in disrepair because it hasn’t been maintained.

So once more we play our dangerous game … trying to find and provide information about 4G and 3G in those areas.

Having just had a call from a returning captain that had been in Bimini in the Bahamas – he reports that he had trouble getting his 4G system on the Internet there … and tried an APN setting but still “no joy” for connecting. In hindsight he tells that he may have put “internet.btcbahamas.net” or such instead of “internet.btcbahamas.com”. Anyway we are in the hunt for red 4g – APN settings and such. So anyone knowing what they are please email me at my contact information below. I have also put an inquiry in to customerservice@btcbahamas.com and am waiting for the reply.

It was also suggested, and “I get it!”, that it would be nice to have an APN settings list for the Bahamas and Caribbean available online somewhere that others can make use of. So maybe such a thing can be done.

Some FAQ material on btcbahamas.com led me to a term I had not heard before:

LIME … Hopefully that doesn’t mean LAME!

LIME (That’s L for Landline, I for Internet, M for Mobile and E for Entertainment), the Caribbean’s leading communications company.  LIME used to be Cable & Wireless.  The company was rebranded in 2008 as LIME.  LIME offers mobile, landline, broadband and enterprise services throughout the Caribbean.

They are renowned amongst their customers for competitive rates, unbeatable coverage, ior customer care, a wide variety of products and services, innovative new technology and state-of-the-art handsets as well as community support and development.”

LIME operates in 14 countries of the Caribbean and feature a unique one network feature in that a LIME sim will work in any LIME country like its local to that country.  This means that I can take a LIME Montserrat sim to Jamaica, and make calls as I were local to Jamaica

* I don’t know what that means for Internet roaming? But it seems like it might be an important key word for the Caribbean in general. Anyone having information about this … please drop and email, and with your permission I will post your comments and information on here.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LIME_(Cable_%26_Wireless)

LIME, an acronym for ‘Landline, Internet, Mobile, Entertainment’, is a communications provider owned by the British based Cable & Wireless Communications plc operating in Anguilla, Antigua & Barbuda, Barbados, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Dominica, Grenada, Jamaica, Montserrat, St. Kitts & Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent & the Grenadines and Turks & Caicos in the Caribbean.[1]

The company is formed from the integrated businesses of Cable & Wireless in the Caribbean which adopted the LIME name on 3 November 2008. LIME operates as the native incumbent telecommunications service providers in many of the islands where they reside and offer an array of services.[2]

The company also operated mobile telecommunications under the bmobile brand from 2003 until rebranding them as LIME in 2008. Competitors include Digicel (largest mobile competitor) and Columbus Communications (brand name Flow).

Cable & Wireless Communications, LIME’s parent company also owns a 49% share in TSTT in Trinidad & Tobago and a 51% share in BaTelCo in The Bahamas.

* Hmmmm … that last part was very interesting! So they are all in bed together … so this Caribbean and Bahamas story just took and interesting twist. An Oliver Twist http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oliver_Twist, perhaps not. But a twist nonetheless. Hopefully further information will not be an http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Artful_Dodger Artful Dodger.

LIME has a web site: http://www.lime.com/ the Bahamas link in the Country drop down box – brings us back to http://www2.btcbahamas.com/. Then btcbahamas has one of those lame (not lime) functionalities that will not let you use your browser BACK button to escape their clutches. Other countries seem to go to specific LIME web sites for that island / country … but include also the drop down box to change countries. LIME has a customer support email address:  customerservice@lime.com

There’s a roaming widget page: http://www.lime.com/bb/personal/mobile/roaming.jsp

Lime-barbados-bahamas-voice-internet-roam

I don’t see anything cheap about roaming voice and data according to that widget query. (Click image to enlarge.)

* Still no answer from btcbahamas.com on the APN situation … other than automated responses to my query telling that “we’re working on it”.

STAY TUNED!

Amateur Radio: 6W2SC – Senegal, OK4RQ – Czech Republic, IZ0VXF – Italy, YU1DW – Serbia, EA4AOC/1 – Spain, PJ2/VA7AM, DR20CFT – Germany

26. March 2013 22:58 / Alan Spicer

On 20 Meters today …

Amateur Radio: 6W2SC – Senegal, OK4RQ – Czech Republic, IZ0VXF – Italy, YU1DW – Serbia, EA4AOC/1 – Spain, PJ2/VA7AM – Curacao Island in the Caribbean (S.W. near Venezuela), DR20CFT – Germany.

* Video of the audio on my radio on all except EA4AOC/1 – not uploaded yet, and PJ2/VA7AM, and DR20CFT - something happened on Youtube with the processing of this video and many hours later I finally deleted it on there since it’s dead anyway.

6W2SC in Senegal on 20M. At the beginning I said it was going to be difficult – because there was a ringing noise (QRM) on frequency, I have powerline noise locally, and the station was operating Split Frequency in a DX Pileup. I’ll never make it you say? I did make it – with 100 watts and an OCF Dipole at barely 30 feet off the ground. (and some magic dust like Santa Claus uses.)

6W2SC – QRZ image (click to enlarge – or look him up on QRZ.COM)

6W2SC-Map-QRZ-Google

6W2SC – Senegal – 4206 miles away …

OK4RQ from Czech Republic on 20 Meters. 5005.8 miles away.

IZ0VXF on 20 Meters at Lido di Lavinio Anzio ( Roma), Italy. 5175.4 miles away.

YU1DW – Serbia on 20M – I edited and shortened this video because the audio level was too high into my camera at first. I made contact with this guy near the start – but left the video running for awhile after. Often stations like to hear what they sound like over on this side of “The pond”. Where the audio distorts (clips) it’s my web cam not his audio. 5440.8 miles away.

VA7AM_at_PJ2T_2011

PJ2/VA7AM on Curacao Island in the Caribbean … Worked him on 20-meters as well. No video yet because the upload failed.

EA4AOC

EA4AOC/1 – Spain – he was not in his home call district “4″ hence “Portable” or “/1″ Geography to follow …

EA4AOC/1 (portable in Spain Call District 1) Google Earth Geography … location is an approximation as he didn’t say where he was actually and all I can do is approximate by where Call District 1 area is. Anyway he was portable / mobile … in Northwest Spain – that’s close enough for government work.

Price Reduced on 4G Marine Pack* ™ $976.30, Router only $564.30

26. March 2013 02:54 / Alan Spicer

Please see the “Important Pages on ASMT Blog” specifically AA – 4G Marine Pack* ™ (US, Int’l – Available NOW) – $976.30.

I was just notified of a price reduction from our distributor and the savings are being passed on to you.

* We have assembled the “4G Marine Pack* ™” which includes Netcom 4G100W-01 (4G100W-02 also available) and the following items needed to install a working system on a marine vessel (Sail or Motor Yacht):

Marine antenna, 10m LMR400, lightning arrestor, patch cables, connectors, 12v cable

- Note: This is the same type of Marine Pack that we’ve sold for years for the Ericsson W35 3G+ System.

- I provide Front Line Support for the product, My distributor provides 2nd Line of Support, Netcom provides the final line of support for the product. This is the same type of support that we had arranged for the Ericsson W35 system and it’s a beautiful thing.

You could probably find this product online from other sellers (it’s doubtful in the U.S. though) but you will not find the complete 4G Marine Pack anywhere else. And you will not find the lines of support that we have arranged through a long relationship with our distributor (from the Ericsson W35 and W25 product line.) We know that the product is lab tested by Netcom and our Distributor. We also handle all the typical import problems (FCC forms, Import Fees, Korean DRAM certs) that we’ve seen with the Ericsson products. We get the best shipping deal on the product and it arrives to you safely with full warranty and the aforementioned support system in place. You can’t beat that anywhere.

Amateur Radio: SouthCars Net on 40 Meters (Video)

22. March 2013 14:21 / Alan Spicer

I got a recording of part of the South Coast Amateur Radio Service Net on 7.251 Mhz this morning – long enough for me to wait to check in from Fort Lauderdale and a little bit of the net after that point. Stations in other parts of Florida and other parts of the Southeaster U.S. check into this net.

SouthCars is: http://southcars.com/main/

AS AN EXERCIZE for my readers … In the video below … How many Signal Bars or what signal strength is my radio showing on receive? For example when Net Control station is talking. If you get that one – What method of modulation or signaling am I using?

Here’s my video:
