Replace your PC Shared WiFi with Fixed, Web Page Manageable, WiFi Hotspot Sharing System

 Picture 159

Are you currently getting WiFi Hotspot Internet on your yacht by connecting with a PC Computer and sharing that onto your boat for laptops and such with Windows Internet Connection Sharing?

If you already have an external WiFi Antenna installed you can replace using that unreliable Internet Connection Sharing to share a WiFi signal - with our Marine Wireless Bridge / WiFi Hotspot Sharing Router System - and for only $500.00. And you can probably install it yourself????!!!!

Chances are you have an LMR-400 coax cable run … it is using N-Connectors and is then adapted to a little radio pigtail that goes into a WiFi Card in your Desktop PC.

Get this system for $500.00 (and any shipping depending on how fast you want it?) and put it in place of the PC. Now I didn’t say throw away the PC computer… Instead you will jack in the New System to your onboard network - let it manage the network. Now you can shut down that PC when it’s not needed instead of leaving it on around-the-clock. The New System will now do what the PC was doing, but more reliable. Windows Internet Connection Sharing tends to be flakey! It stops working and confuses the heck out of you!

This Marine WiFi Bridge / WiFi Hotspot Sharing System has a nice Web Page-based Control Center where you can find and connect to WiFi Hotspot Systems. Once you are connected this connection is shared throughout the boat. You don’t have to leave another computer on at all. It handles the onboard network (even when it’s not being used to connect to an outside WiFi Signal.) It does this using common NAT and DHCP protocols - NAT hides your onboard network by translating the Outside Internet Address to Inside Internet Addresses (typically 192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x) - DHCP assigns each computer one of those “inside” addresses and also Network Mask, Gateway, and DNS Server settings. Without this kind of automated help … your onboard network can quickly become on non-working mess.

Here’s the system:

15dBi Gain Directional Radome Enclosed Yagi WiFi Antenna features high gain and a 30° beam-width

15dbi Radome Yagi WiFi

Get some of those hard-to-reach hotspots wether you’re at anchor or just too far away for some reason. Bring out the Big Gun.

Give those hotspots, and your hotspot router (hopefully one of our MWB’s) what they want! More signal on target to the hotspot - and more receive signal to your hotspot router. (* Of course you *know* you’ll have to aim this thing.) We normally do Omni-Directional antennas on yachts. This is precisely so that you don’t have to aim the antenna. But *sometimes* you end up with your boat in a spot too far from civilization. You just cannot reach the hotspots because they are out of range. Some of you may know from old CB Radio days or from Ham/Amateur Radio - that using directional antennas is often beneficial. Often it’s the only way to get a signal through (receive and send.) Obviously gain antennas do so by taking away from somewhere else. In an Omni antenna you pull in the vertical-beamwidth and instead of wasting signal up and down you concentrate more on where the target is. The same thing goes with Yagi antennas but taking a step further and also pulling in the horizontal-beamwidth. So now you concentrate not only on vertically where the target it - but horizontal as well. Instead of listening all around 360 degrees you listen only 30 degrees. On transmitting instead of wasting power 360 degrees around - you concentrate your power on a much narrower area. This isn’t for everybody - because you will have work a bit to aim the antenna. But if you are more than a couple miles off shore at anchor - or you are somewhere where the needed wifi signal is just too weak. This can help. I only recommend this as a backup antenna. Not as your main WiFi antenna. Hook it up and use it when you need it.

 2.4 GHz 15 dBi Yagi Antenna - 12in N-Female Connector

Rugged and Weatherproof

12in low-loss coax lead terminated with a N-Female connector
30° beam-width & DC Short lightning protection
Light weight, UV-stable & UL flame rated radome
Includes tilt and swivel mast mount
Can be installed for either vertical or horizontal polarization

antenna is supplied with a 60 degree tilt and swivel mast mount kit

* You find the place to put it. It needs a mast (pole) to mount it on. Details available on request.

* Note: If you already have our MWB WiFi Hotspot Sharing Router System (if you don’t you’re at the right place to get one anyway…) then it has an “Align Antenna” feature that will give a Real Time colorful signal strength indication - which would be excellent for aiming one of these Big Gun antennas. If you have wireless onboard that covers topside you could carry a laptop up with you to aim the thing.

Alan Spicer Marine Telecom - Marine WiFi MWB - Customer Feedback (Good!)

* Alan Spicer Marine Telecom sells and supports the installation and use of a Marine Wireless Bridge (WiFi Hotspot Sharing Router) for Sailing and Motor Yachts. Here is a customer feedback on the MWB.

Hello Alan,

We are currently at Harbor Island and docked at the Harbor Island marina which is the most southern marina here.  The MWB is working well. We have purchased an Internet connection from the marina that is provided by Island Web Cafe Internet, IWC Internet.  $150 per month and it test out at 400 for both upload and download.  We have a signal in the -50db’s.

We have installed several ‘Magic Jack’ devices and are very happy with the VoIP service.  There is a restaurant at the end of the dock that gives free wifi, but their signal is in the -80dbs.  I am curious about experimenting with some directional antennas some time.

I will try to keep you informed about how the internet holds up with a boat full of guest surfing and using VoIP.

Tom

Yachts: If you don’t have a WiFi Internet System to augment 3G Cellular… get with me!

Yacht captains, owners, … If you don’t have a WiFi Hotspot Internet (Router) System on board to augment your 3G Cellular… Get with me and I can hook you up with that.

See my other alerts in this same blog about 5Gb Internet limits problems on 3G Cellular. WiFi is often free in many marinas, docking facilities, and anchorages … is Very Fast on average … and doesn’t have 5Gb data limitations. So this can give you another option to farm off some of that Internet Bandwidth usage on something that doesn’t count the bytes and try to byte the wallet.

No you don’t have to break the bank. It’s not as expensive as you think it is. And in all likelyhood you can install it yourself with my help. You may not have to hire an hourly contractor to come onboard, or bother the owner to approve another big estimate or quote. My consulting agreements are on special and I can specify and diagram and document the whole thing … very inexpensively. So you save money implementing it as well as saving money by using it. (WiFi that is.)

I always say have as many Internet Options as possible on a boat. Well 3G Cellular and WiFi Systems are two that I specialize in. And how to switch between them.

Thanks!

Yachts: WiFi Hotspot Internet Router - use Free or Inexpensive Fast WiFi Hotspot Internet for everyone on board!

Alan Spicer Marine Telecom has a main purpose to sail and motor yachts - to help you save money on your communications and Internet Access costs. I often specify multiple systems to give you least-cost options for any particular location. Often one of those lowest cost options is WiFi Hotspot Internet which is offered by many marinas and other locations where you travel. Often WiFi Hotspot access is FREE - or included with your docking fees. At other times it is offered for relatively low cost weekly, monthly, or yearly by pay WiFi Hotspot Systems. But you’ll want to take full advantage of those systems by sharing a single connection to them to all of your computers and laptops on board.

Alan Spicer Marine Telecom has just the thing. A WiFi Hotspot Sharing System - with 400mW power output, and all the Coax Cable and Outdoor antenna parts of the system included. I also offer installation support via my yearly consulting and support agreements which can help you get the whole thing installed and working on your vessel. This includes integration with other Internet Systems that you may have, and the onboard wired and wireless networking that you will need to make full use of all of this.

Economy Buster Special: Ericsson W25 for Sail and Motor Yachts - $650 + $72.00 Shipping to U.S. Locations

I have an Economy Buster Special on the Ericsson W25 Fixed Cellular Terminal going on right now. Using a coupon from my:

http://www.merchantcircle.com/business/Alan.Spicer.Marine.Telecom.Alan.Spicer.Telecom.954-683-3426

Merchant Circle Site… You can have the E W25 for $650.00 + $72.00 Shipping only to U.S. Addresses. (outside of the U.S. please inquire first - might be able to do the same kind of deal!)  Within Florida we’ll have to add $39.00 Sales Tax on E W25 Orders.

This is a super economy special. You might need external antenna, coax cable, and coax adaptor for some installations. This doesn’t include the 30 days telephone and email installation support that I offer at the $700.00 price point. However I keep hearing that the E W25 is available at just over $600 so I’m matching that. I’ll give you some installation support still - but just 1 day - the day you receive it. I’ll assist you in hooking it up. With my support agreements (C&S Agreements) by the year - I draw a full network diagram, help you integrate the unit with other Internet Access Systems, and provide easy operation instructions and full support via telephone and email for your onboard network and multiple systems (if needed) for the whole year. It’s worth asking about.

The Ericsson W25 is a Fixed Installation (usually permanently installed) 3G Cellular Internet and Cellular Voice Telephone Appliance - with Telephone ATA (analog telephone attachment) capability which means that it can support PBX Systems and Standard Household type of Analog Telephone sets. That includes RJ11 desk phones and cordless phones - adapted to cellular voice through this unit. Yachts love this gear because it allows fixed price-per-month Fast Internet Access as well as Cellular voice calling inbound and outbound. The unit is Quad Band + WCDMA 2100Mhz (Europe) and takes a single 3G GSM/UMTS Sim Card to make it work. So it can be used anywhere in the world. It can go in a yacht -  It can have an external antenna - It can go in a car - truck - bus or a remote/Construction Site just as easily. It puts out its own WiFi Access Point Signal or can be CAT5 Ethernet wired to a single computer or a whole network of computers. It lets you bring your own HOT SPOT with you whereever you go.

It also has other capabilities… such as Network Attached Storage (USB hard disk or memory stick devices), Fax capability (only in some countries that support it - not currently in the U.S. although you could get Efax.com and have fax capability) via T.38 FOIP. If you want to hear more about it call me @ +1 954-683-3426.

This is a limited time offer. The offer can be withdrawn at any time at my discretion. So get one now.

Buy 2 or more and I’ll discount them even more. Save money on shipping by ordering 2 at the same time. Approx. $95.00 shipping on 2 units - as compared to $72 shipping on 1 (double would be $144) - so ordering one for yourself and one for an associate or friend can save you both money.

High Power WiFi Hotspot Sharing Systems also available. Ask about discounts on purchasing. Consulting and Support Agreements by the year also on sale. Get support for installing both WiFi Hotspot and Cellular 3G Systems seperately or together - and consulting and support all year long.

NBC “See Dead People” ? - Drops Pro-Life Commercial for Super Bowl

http://outbound.afa.net/track?type=click&mailingid=alert_nbcrejects_20090130&messageid=alert_nbcrejects_20090130&databaseid=1234&serial=1181235670&emailid=a_spicer@bellsouth.net&userid=15970148&extra=&&&101&&&https://secure.afa.net/afa/activism/TakeAction.asp?id=343

http://www.onenewsnow.com/Blog/Default.aspx?id=404524

* Maybe NBC sees Dead People … like the movie quote from that movie Sixth Sense (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0167404/quotes) or would rather show commercials about dead people rather than live people? NBC: It’s an AD. Run the damn thing! It doesn’t reflect on NBC’s opinions on the thing, if NBC likes dead people rather than live people - fine! But I think a lot of people should get to see it. You’ve run anti-kill-yourself-smoking ads … why not an anti-kill-people-before-they’re-born ad?

NBC television has rejected a pro-life advertisement which Catholicvote.org bought for a slot in the Super Bowl because the ad contains a pro-life message. The 30-second ad features ultrasound pictures from a baby in its mother’s womb. There is nothing either graphic or political and the word abortion is not even used. In fact, no words are spoken, only graphics that appear on-screen. Yet, the message is extremely powerful. You can view the ad here (see link above.)

That wonderful pro-life Obama commercial you may have seen here recently was supposed to run during the Super Bowl on Sunday. After first accepting it, NBC apparently changed its collective mind, saying it wasn’t going to run advocacy ads during the big game.

Brian Burch, President of Fidelis, a Chicago-based Catholic organization responsible for the commercial, says that NBC initially responded positively and he was raising money to pay for it. Watch the commercial below, and imagine the impact it could have had on the millions who watch the Super Bowl.

Dual Internet Systems for Yachts (WiFi + Cellular) Internet for the Crew, Owners, Guests…

We often go for the “in depth” approach to Internet Access (Internet Sharing Systems / Onboard Yacht Networks) for sail and motor yachts.

Dual Internet Systems for Yachts (WiFi + Cellular) Internet for the Crew, Owners, Guests…

By installing both a WiFi Bridge (aka WiFi Hotspot Sharing Router) and a 3G Cellular Fixed Cellular Terminal (aka Fast Cellular Sharing Router) - we can provide a solution that gives you TWO SERVICES to choose from depending on where you are located with your yacht.

Often WiFi will be the best choice because in the islands of the Carribean or the Bahamas (and other Out-of-the-U.S. locations off the West Coast of the U.S.A.) WiFi is often available at the marina or at anchor. It is often free … or pay per usage by the day, week, or month - and provides a very fast and reliable Internet access method. That is if you’ve got the right antenna up top and the right WiFi Internet Sharing System installed.

Cellular 3G Systems also provide fast Internet access and can also be shared onto a vessels inside onboard network (wired and wireless) and can be a viable option not only in the U.S. but elsewhere. This is because we install Quad Band gear which handles the US 850Mhz/1900Mhz and International 900Mhz/1800Mhz systems. This gear also handles voice telephone via a built-in ATA (Analog Telephone Attachment) capability - which provides Analog RJ-11 phone jack - which can be interconnected with onboard phone jacks or PBX Telephone Systems.

Roaming on Cellular both for voice and Internet is a difficult thing to do. Although Cellular Companies outside of the U.S. often offer pre-paid Sim Cards for hand voice cell phones, they aren’t as apt to provide them (without a term contract) for Internet Access. You can end up with huge roaming bills for Internet if you are not careful. We’ve found that AT&T has some International Roaming Plans that can help with that - to keep your Cellular Internet Roaming costs under control.

ASMT knows how to install the systems, provides the gear, and knows how to install also the inside onboard network gear inside the yacht to make a nice network for sharing files, printers, and Internet Access. Allowing management (Captain, Owners,…) to switch to the best available Internet Access Service that they have - be it Satellite, Cellular , or WiFi Hotspot.

ASMT also works with network storage devices - allowing open or password protected “network hard drive” to store your important files and make them available to those that need them without having to leave PC computers or laptops on all of the time.

ASMT can also help you with additional voice telephone savings by installing VOIP - Voice over Internet Protocol systems - which give you a phone number (any area code you want) an inbound and outbound voice calls to Analog Phone Jacks or PBX system - for very low fixed monthly voice telephone service for your vessel.

ASMT also works with a marine electronics expert so if you need help with other electronics, including Satellite TV and Entertainment systems - please don’t hesitate to call. We’ll forward any inquiries to the appropriate expert.

If you have questions about Computer, Communications, Internet Access, Networks in boats - make sure that you call ASMT!

Happy Holidays to everyone!

The Syrens/Geosat/Wave WiFi changes and confusion

PS, Sorting out Syrens/Wave/GeoSat Solutions: GeoSat has been making high-end marine WiFi systems for years, but for a while they were distributed as Syrens WiFi by an independent company called Radio-at-Sea. Now GeoSat is doing direct distribution as Wave WiFi, but, whereas Radio-at-Sea owned the “Syrens” name, it’s marketing different WiFi hardware under it. So if you’re looking for Syrens (Nik is big fan of its hardware and service), go to Wave WiFi. Which doesn’t mean that there’s anything wrong with the new Syrens gear, except maybe the element of confusion.
